A familiar choice in Canada
Sage 50, formerly known in Canada as Simply Accounting, has been a standard desktop ledger for small and mid-sized Canadian businesses for many years, as of 2026. Plenty of accountants and bookkeepers know it well, and its Canadian edition has long handled provincial sales tax and payroll for local businesses.
Like most desktop ledgers, it was designed around a company file on one machine or a local network. Multi-user access, remote work and access for an outside accountant can take extra setup, such as shared drives, hosting or remote desktop. That’s often the point at which owners start looking at alternatives.
Desktop apps without the file server
SeroBooks gives you native Windows and macOS apps, plus Android and the web, with data hosted on Microsoft Azure. Your team works from the office, the warehouse or home without a VPN, remote desktop or shared drive, and everyone sees the same live books rather than a copy of a file that someone has to send around.
Security includes TLS in transit, encryption at rest, per-business tenant isolation, OAuth sessions with step-up authentication, server-enforced permissions across 207 nodes and an append-only audit trail. Period locks protect closed months, and records are retained for six years in line with CRA requirements. Signed and notarized apps protect the software you install.
Inventory, payroll and POS on one ledger
SeroBooks covers serials, batches, expiry, warehouse bins, landed cost, assemblies, stock valuation and forecasting with two lead times. SeroBooks Pro adds payroll for all 13 Canadian jurisdictions and the US, with T4 and ROE files generated for upload, and SeroPayroll is available on its own from $25/mo. Payroll runs post to the general ledger once, never twice.
SeroPOS posts sales directly into SeroBooks, so a store or restaurant doesn’t need a separate integration to get revenue, tax and inventory movements into the books. For businesses that sell at a counter and keep the books in Sage 50 today, that removes a daily export and import. Tax collected at the till is recorded as a liability.

When Sage 50 may be the better fit
If you work on a single Windows machine, your accountant is deeply invested in Sage 50, and your needs are stable, staying put is reasonable. Sage 50 has a long Canadian track record, a mature feature set and a large community of bookkeepers who can support it. Many businesses run on it happily for years.
Some businesses also rely on industry-specific workflows, custom reports or add-ons built around Sage 50 over many years. Check carefully that SeroBooks covers them before you move, and test with your own data during the trial rather than relying on a comparison table. Your accountant’s input is valuable here, since they know your file best.
Moving over
SeroBooks’ documented migration tools are for QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online. If you’re coming from Sage 50, contact the team to plan how opening balances, customer and supplier lists, items and open invoices and bills come across, and pick a clean cut-over date such as a month-end or year-end. Keep your Sage 50 file for reference after the move.
Accountant practice seats are free, so your accountant can review the setup and opening balances before you go live. Plans start at $79.99/mo for Starter, with a 14-day free trial, and the desktop-style workspace keeps the transition manageable for staff used to a traditional desktop ledger. Familiar menus help long-time users settle in.
