Built for the person who closes the books
Most small-business software is designed for the owner and tolerated by the accountant. Sero’s accounting was built around a double-entry ledger that a professional can trust: a real chart of accounts, a general ledger you can drill into, period locks, year-end close and an append-only audit trail. The owner gets invoices and inventory; you get a file that ties out.
Bookkeepers and accountants are one of the industries SeroBooks is designed for. Practice seats are free, accountant access lets you work inside a client’s file, and multi-company lets you move between clients from one login. You are not paying a seat fee for every file you touch. Your clients pay for their own plans, and you keep one login across the files they share with you.
Client work without exports and backups
The classic month-end involves a client sending a backup file, a bank statement and a shoebox of receipts. In SeroBooks you log in to the live file. Bank statements come in by CSV with rules that categorize repeat transactions, and live bank connections through Plaid are rolling out. Receipt and invoice scanning turns a photo into a bill for review.
Reconcile against the statement, post adjusting entries, run the financial statements and lock the period. Memorized and recurring transactions handle the monthly accruals. If something changes after you close, period locks stop it, and the audit trail in Pro shows who tried. Approvals can also hold money documents until a second person signs off, which suits clients who want a check on supplier payments.
- Bank reconciliation with CSV import and rules
- Recurring and memorized transactions
- 160+ built-in reports and a custom report builder
- Fixed assets with CCA and MACRS
- Year-end close and period locks
Sales tax and year-end for Canadian and US clients
For Canadian clients, SeroBooks handles GST, HST, PST and QST for every province and files returns from the Sales Tax Centre. Corporations can prepare T2 and GIFI figures, and fixed assets track capital cost allowance by class. T5018 slips are available for construction clients paying subcontractors. Reports export to Excel and PDF, so working papers and client summaries are easy to assemble at year-end.
For US clients, SeroBooks tracks sales tax and watches economic nexus across 50 states, so you know when a client’s remote sales cross a state’s threshold. Fixed assets use MACRS. Payroll for US employees is part of SeroBooks Pro, with federal and state withholding and W-2 EFW2 files. Clients with both Canadian and US operations can keep both payrolls in the same ledger.
Payroll for every client on one plan
SeroPayroll’s Accountant plan is $1,200 a year for unlimited companies and unlimited employees. It runs Canadian payroll in all 13 provinces and territories, with CPP and CPP2, EI, QPP and QPIP, T4127 tax, vacation pay, statutory holidays and overtime calculated by each statute. Remittances follow the CRA calendar, including accelerated schedules and Revenu Québec.
Year-end produces T4 and T4 Summary XML, T4A and T5018, plus RL-1 slips. ROE files go to ROE Web, and PIER review runs before the CRA does. Direct deposit generates CPA 005 files for major Canadian banks that the client uploads, and GL journals export as CSV or IIF-style files.
- Unlimited companies and employees: $1,200/yr
- Roles: Admin, Payroll, Read-only
- English and Canadian French interface
- Same login across SeroBooks and SeroPayroll
Moving clients off QuickBooks Desktop
Many firms still support clients on QuickBooks Desktop. SeroBooks includes a QuickBooks Desktop migration with a dry run, so you can compare balances before switching a client over, and a penny-verified export. The desktop-style workspace uses familiar QuickBooks Desktop menus, which shortens the retraining for both you and the client.
Clients who also run a store or restaurant can use SeroPOS, which syncs into SeroBooks, QuickBooks Online or Xero. That gives you daily sales and tax summaries in the ledger instead of a stack of Z-reports. If you want to see how a firm workflow looks, book a demo or ask about the partner program.
Frequently asked questions
Do accountants pay for SeroBooks?
No. Practice seats for accountants and bookkeepers are free in SeroBooks. Your clients hold their own subscriptions, from Starter at $79.99 a month to Pro at $300 a month, and you work in their files through accountant access and multi-company switching without a per-client seat fee.
How much is SeroPayroll for a bookkeeping practice?
The SeroPayroll Accountant plan is $1,200 a year and covers unlimited companies and unlimited employees. It runs Canadian payroll in all 13 provinces and territories, with remittances, T4 XML, ROEs and PIER review. SeroPayroll is Canada-only; US payroll is available inside SeroBooks Pro.
Can I switch between client companies easily?
Yes. SeroBooks supports multi-company and accountant access, so one login reaches every client file you have been granted. The same login also works in SeroPayroll. Each client’s data stays isolated in its own tenant, and server-enforced permissions control what each user can see.
Does SeroBooks have an audit trail?
Yes. SeroBooks Pro includes an append-only audit trail that records each change with the user and time. Every plan supports period locks and year-end close, so closed months cannot be edited after you sign off. Approvals can also sit in front of money documents for clients who want a second check.
Can I move a client from QuickBooks Desktop to SeroBooks?
Yes. SeroBooks includes a QuickBooks Desktop migration with a dry run so you can review balances before committing, and a penny-verified export. The workspace uses familiar QuickBooks Desktop-style menus. Staff who learned QuickBooks Desktop usually find their way around quickly. QuickBooks Online data can also be imported. A practical approach is to move one client first to learn the workflow, then the rest.
