Why small businesses end up with too many apps

Most small businesses start with a card reader, a spreadsheet and a free invoicing tool. A year later there is a separate inventory app, a payroll service, a bookkeeper re-keying sales into accounting software, and a month-end that takes a weekend. Each tool is reasonable on its own. Together they create gaps where numbers drift apart and nobody is sure which total is right.

Sero was built the other way round. SeroPOS came first for restaurant and retail counters, SeroBooks grew out of it so the till, the shelf and the ledger became one system, and payroll was built inside SeroBooks before being released on its own as SeroPayroll. The products can be bought separately, but they were designed to agree with each other.

Pick the product that matches today’s problem

You do not need all three on day one. A café or shop that mainly needs a fast checkout can start with SeroPOS, which already includes 25+ reports, register and Z-reports, shifts and built-in double-entry accounting. A service business or wholesaler that lives on invoices and bills will get more from SeroBooks. A business that already has a POS and books but runs payroll by hand can start with SeroPayroll.

When the second problem shows up, the next product connects to what you already run. SeroPOS syncs with SeroBooks, QuickBooks Online and Xero, and SeroBooks Pro includes payroll inside the same ledger for Canadian and US employees. Nothing has to be re-entered, and the history you built in the first product carries forward. A café that adds SeroBooks a year later keeps its sales records, and a SeroBooks customer who hires staff can turn on payroll without moving files.

  • Counter sales, tables or a retail floor: SeroPOS
  • Invoices, bills, inventory and year-end: SeroBooks
  • Canadian pay runs, remittances, T4s and ROEs: SeroPayroll
  • Payroll inside the books, Canada and US: SeroBooks Pro

Accounting an owner can actually close

SeroBooks keeps a real chart of accounts and general ledger behind every invoice, bill and deposit. You can import a bank statement as CSV, set rules that categorize repeat transactions, and reconcile against the statement balance. Live bank connections through Plaid are rolling out. Financial statements, A/R and A/P ageing and 160+ built-in reports come from the same ledger, so the numbers match.

Year-end is where small businesses often pay for cleanup. Period locks stop old months from changing after they are closed, and accountant access lets your bookkeeper or CPA log in to your file instead of waiting for exports. Canadian corporations can prepare T2 and GIFI figures, and fixed assets track CCA or MACRS depreciation.

Payroll without a separate spreadsheet

For Canadian employers, SeroPayroll calculates CPP and CPP2, EI, federal and provincial income tax, vacation pay, statutory holidays and overtime the way each province writes its rules. It tracks PD7A remittances on the CRA calendar, produces T4 XML for filing, and creates ROE files for ROE Web. Direct deposit is a CPA 005 bank file you upload to your bank.

Pricing follows headcount: $25 a month for up to 10 employees, $50 a month for 11 to 50. Employees who are only paid do not need a login. If you run US staff, payroll for the 50 states sits in SeroBooks Pro at $300 a month alongside job costing, forecasting and the audit trail.

  • Weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly or monthly pay runs
  • Pay stubs with year-to-date totals and masked SIN
  • Timesheets and time clock
  • Pay runs post to the general ledger once

Getting started in an afternoon

SeroPOS is self-serve: download the app from the App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Store or Mac App Store, sign up inside the app, and load demo data to practise before you open. Products can be imported from Excel, and there is guided setup with knowledge base articles on every admin screen plus live in-app chat.

SeroBooks has Windows, macOS and Android installers plus a web app, with iPhone and iPad apps coming soon. If you are leaving QuickBooks Desktop, the migration includes a dry run so you can check balances before you commit. Prices are in US dollars and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to start with Sero?

SeroPOS Standard is $29.99 a month, or $299.99 a year, and includes unlimited products, multiple users, loyalty and chain store management. SeroBooks Starter is $79.99 a month and SeroPayroll starts at $25 a month for up to 10 employees. Each has a 14-day free trial, so you can test with real data before paying.

Do I need to buy SeroPOS, SeroBooks and SeroPayroll together?

No. The three products are sold separately and each works on its own. They are designed to connect, so a SeroPOS business can sync sales into SeroBooks later, and SeroBooks Pro includes payroll in the same ledger. Many owners start with one product and add another once the business needs it.

Is Sero suitable for a one-person business?

Yes. A sole operator can run SeroPOS on a single phone or tablet, or use SeroBooks Starter for invoices, expenses and sales tax. Both allow more users later as you hire, and SeroPayroll only charges by employee band, with paid-only employees needing no login of their own.

Does Sero work for both Canadian and US small businesses?

Yes. SeroBooks handles GST, HST, PST and QST for every province plus US sales tax and economic nexus. SeroPOS works in both countries in 16 languages. SeroPayroll is Canada-only; US payroll is included in SeroBooks Pro, which covers federal and state withholding and W-2 files.

Can my accountant work in my Sero file?

Yes. SeroBooks has accountant access so your bookkeeper or CPA can log in directly, and practice seats for accountants are free. They see the same ledger, reports and audit history you do, which usually shortens year-end and removes the back-and-forth of emailing exports.
