Why kitchens move to a display

Paper tickets get lost, smudged, splashed or stuck to the wrong plate. A kitchen display system shows each order on a screen as soon as the server or cashier fires it, with modifiers and notes laid out clearly and in the same place every time. Cooks work through the queue in order, and nothing depends on reading a hurried server’s handwriting at the height of a Friday rush.

SeroPOS supports both kitchen displays and kitchen order tickets, so you do not have to choose one approach for the whole building. Many kitchens use a mix: a screen on the main line where cooks need to see the whole queue, and a printer at the bar or pass where space is tight, or where grease and heat make screens impractical.

Routing orders by station

Items can be routed to the station that prepares them. Drinks go to the bar, salads to the cold line, mains to the grill and desserts to pastry. Each station sees only what it needs to make, which reduces noise on the screen, keeps cooks focused during the rush and stops the bartender from scrolling past twelve burgers to find the one cocktail that is waiting.

Because modifiers are entered through nested modifier groups at the till, the kitchen sees them in a consistent structure on every ticket. Requests such as no onions or a gluten-free bun are never buried in a free-text note, and allergy instructions appear where cooks expect them, which matters most on the nights when the kitchen is under the most pressure.

  • Dine-in, take-away and delivery orders clearly labelled
  • QR self-orders and web orders join the same queue
  • Combos break out into their component items

Connected to the rest of the restaurant

The kitchen display is part of SeroPOS, not a separate system bolted on with its own logins and menu. Orders come from the same sale screen, tableside devices and online channels, and the floor plan shows table status as orders progress. When the table pays, the bill reflects exactly what the kitchen made, including every modifier and upcharge that was entered when the order was taken.

With recipe management on SeroPOS Pro, every item sent to the kitchen also deducts its ingredients from inventory. Stock and food cost stay accurate without an extra count at the end of the night, and low-stock alerts warn the manager before the kitchen runs out of something halfway through service.

Hardware and setup

SeroPOS works with ESC/POS kitchen printers from Epson, Star and compatible brands over USB or the network, with printer auto-detect to save time during setup. Kitchen displays run on standard devices supported by SeroPOS, so you are not tied to a proprietary screen or a hardware lease. If a screen fails, a replacement can usually be bought locally and set up the same day.

Setup is guided in the app, and the knowledge base covers each admin screen in plain language. Start with the 14-day free trial, no credit card required, and test the full kitchen flow with demo data and a few practice orders before going live on a busy night with real guests waiting.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a kitchen display or can I use printers?

Either works with SeroPOS. You can send kitchen order tickets to ESC/POS kitchen printers, show orders on a kitchen display, or use both at once. Many restaurants use a screen on the main line and a printer at the bar or take-away packing station, and route items to each by station.

Can orders be sent to different stations?

Yes. Items can be routed by station, so the bar sees drinks, the grill sees mains and the cold line sees salads and desserts. Each station gets only what it needs to prepare, which keeps screens and tickets readable during busy service and reduces the chance of an item being missed.

Do online and QR orders show on the KDS?

Yes. Orders placed through SeroPOS QR self-ordering or your SeroPOS online store arrive in the web-order queue and go to the kitchen like any other order. They are labelled by order mode, so staff know at a glance whether each order is dine-in, take-away or delivery.

Which SeroPOS plan includes the kitchen display?

Kitchen order tickets and the kitchen display are part of SeroPOS. Standard is $29.99 a month and Pro is $49.99 a month in USD, both with a 14-day free trial. Pro adds recipe management, which links each kitchen order to ingredient-level stock deduction and food costing.

What kitchen printers does SeroPOS support?

SeroPOS supports ESC/POS printers from Epson, Star and compatible brands, connected by USB or over the network, with auto-detect to simplify setup. Because it uses standard printers rather than proprietary hardware, you can often keep the kitchen printers you already have when you switch to SeroPOS.
