Canadian sales tax is not one tax
A business in Ontario charges 13% HST. One in British Columbia charges 5% GST plus 7% PST, collected and filed separately with different agencies. Québec has GST and QST. Alberta has GST only. Sell across provincial lines and the rate depends on where the customer is. SeroBooks is built for Canada rather than localized to it, and handles GST, HST, PST and QST for every province and territory.
Each customer and supplier carries a tax setting, and each item can be set as taxable, zero-rated or exempt, so the right tax lands on every invoice and bill line automatically. Staff do not need to memorize which province charges what; they choose the customer and the item, and SeroBooks applies the rules.
The Sales Tax Centre
Tax collected on sales and tax paid on purchases flow into the SeroBooks Sales Tax Centre. For each reporting period, it shows what you collected, the input tax credits you can claim and the net amount owing, broken down by tax and by jurisdiction. You can then file your returns and record the payment or refund against the period in the same place.
Because the Sales Tax Centre reads from the same ledger as your invoices, bills and counter sales, the return ties to the books without a separate spreadsheet. If the CRA or a provincial ministry ever asks how a figure was reached, you can drill from the return line down to the individual transactions that make it up.
- GST/HST return figures for the CRA
- Provincial PST figures where applicable
- QST figures for Revenu Québec
- Payments and refunds recorded against the period
Tax at the counter
SeroPOS applies tax to each sale based on the tax settings for the item and the location, and its tax reports summarize what was collected per period. For restaurants and retailers that run SeroPOS with SeroBooks, counter sales reach the ledger with tax already split by type, so the Sales Tax Centre includes them automatically alongside invoiced sales.
Items with special treatment, such as basic groceries, children’s clothing or certain prepared foods, can be set up with the tax rule that applies in your province. Getting that configuration right once means every cashier charges the correct tax on every sale, without relying on staff to remember exceptions during a busy shift.
Amazon and marketplaces
Online marketplaces collect and remit tax on some sales as marketplace facilitators. SeroBooks for Amazon splits that tax out of each settlement, so you do not report or remit tax Amazon has already handled on your behalf. It supports Amazon.ca, Amazon.com and Amazon.com.mx, which suits Canadian sellers who also reach US and Mexican customers.
SeroBooks starts at $79.99 a month in USD and SeroBooks for Amazon is $150 a month, each with a 14-day free trial. Both were built in British Columbia by a Canadian company, with Canadian sales tax treated as a core requirement from the beginning rather than a feature added later for a new market.
