What franchise operators actually need from software

A franchise unit is a small business with somebody else’s playbook. The menu or product range, the service standard and the reporting cadence are often set by the brand, while the franchisee owns the till, the staff and the books. Software has to support both: consistent operations at the counter and clean, comparable numbers that the owner and their accountant can trust.

Multi-unit franchisees feel this most. Three or four locations under one owner means three or four sets of sales reports, inventory counts and payroll runs. Sero focuses on the parts of that job it is built for: point of sale, multi-location reporting, inventory, permissions, accounting and Canadian payroll. It does not try to replace the brand’s own operations manual or franchisor portal.

Consistent selling at every unit

SeroPOS gives each unit the same sale screen, modifier groups with upcharges, combos, discounts, split bills and mixed tender. Restaurant franchises get kitchen order tickets, a kitchen display and drag-and-drop floor plans. Retail franchises get barcode scanning, variations, lot and expiry tracking and purchase orders. Button layouts and colours can be arranged so staff moving between units see a familiar screen.

Price groups and customer groups help where pricing differs by audience, and loyalty points work the same at each location. Offline mode keeps a unit selling through an internet outage, which matters when a busy lunch cannot wait for the connection to return. Sales recorded offline sync once the unit is back online.

  • Fast sale screen with nested modifiers
  • Kitchen display and kitchen tickets for food franchises
  • Barcode scanning and label printing for retail
  • Loyalty points and customer profiles
  • QR self-ordering and online catalogue

Reporting the owner group can compare

SeroPOS includes multi-location management with consolidated chain reporting. An owner with several units can pull sales, P&L, tax, stock, trending items and staff performance for a single location or across the group, then export to Excel or PDF. Register and Z-reports close each shift at each unit so cash variances are caught locally.

SeroBooks takes that further at the accounting level. Every unit sits in one ledger with transactions tagged by location, so a franchisee can run a P&L per unit or for the whole company. Budgets, cash-flow projections and 160+ built-in reports, plus a custom report builder, help prepare the figures a brand or lender asks for.

Permissions that match the org chart

In a franchise group, the person running the Tuesday lunch shift should not be able to change prices across the group, and the area manager should not need the owner’s password to approve a stock order. SeroPOS uses role-based permissions for staff at the till. SeroBooks enforces 207 permission nodes on the server, with View and Allow rights and approvals in front of money documents.

SeroBooks Pro adds the append-only audit trail, so every change carries a user and a timestamp. When a unit’s inventory or cash looks off, you can see what happened rather than guess. Period locks stop closed months from changing after the accountant has signed off. That keeps each unit’s reported figures stable once they have been sent to the brand or a lender.

  • Unit staff: sell, open and close shifts
  • Unit manager: inventory, purchase orders, local reports
  • Area manager or owner: all units, approvals, consolidated reports
  • Accountant: ledger, reconciliation and year-end access

Payroll and plans for multi-unit owners

Canadian franchisees can run payroll in SeroPayroll, which calculates CPP, EI, tax, vacation pay, statutory holidays and overtime by each province’s rules and prepares T4s and ROEs. Plans go by headcount, from $25 a month up to 10 employees to $249 a month for 101 to 500. Franchisees with US staff can use payroll inside SeroBooks Pro.

SeroPOS Standard is $29.99 a month and includes chain store management; Pro is $49.99 a month and adds QuickBooks and Xero sync, advanced reporting and recipe management. SeroBooks Pro includes 3 locations, and each additional location is $100 a month in either product. Sero does not offer a royalty-calculation module, so royalty reporting is built from the sales reports.

Frequently asked questions

Is SeroPOS a good fit for franchise restaurants?

SeroPOS was built for restaurants, including quick service, full service, cafés, pizzerias and bakeries. Each unit gets modifiers, combos, kitchen display, floor plans and offline mode, and multi-location management adds consolidated chain reporting so a multi-unit owner can compare locations from one place.

Can a franchisee keep several units in one set of books?

Yes. SeroBooks multi-location keeps every unit in one company file and one ledger, with transactions tagged by location so you can report per unit or for the whole business. SeroBooks Pro includes 3 locations at $300 a month, and each extra location is $100 a month.

Does Sero calculate franchise royalties?

Sero does not include a dedicated royalty-management feature. Franchisees typically use the consolidated sales reports in SeroPOS and the per-location financial statements in SeroBooks to prepare royalty and marketing-fund figures. Reports export to Excel and PDF, which makes them easy to send in the format a brand requests.

Can I stop unit managers from seeing other locations?

Yes. SeroPOS uses role-based permissions to set what staff and managers can do, and SeroBooks enforces permissions on the server with View and Allow rights. Owners and area managers can see consolidated reporting while each unit manager works within the access their role grants.

Can our franchise accountant access the books directly?

Yes. SeroBooks includes accountant access and multi-company, so an accountant serving several franchisees can switch between client files. Practice seats for accountants are free. They can reconcile, review reports and handle year-end close directly in the file without waiting for exports.
