Remitting on the right schedule
Every Canadian employer remits source deductions, meaning income tax, CPP and EI, to the CRA on a schedule set by its average monthly withholding amount. Small employers may qualify as quarterly remitters, most are regular monthly remitters, and larger employers fall into accelerated threshold 1 or threshold 2, with remittances due several times a month.
SeroPayroll supports all four schedules and shows the PD7A amount for each period, so you know what to pay and by when. Late remittances attract penalties and interest even when the amount is right, so a clear calendar of what is due next matters as much as getting each deduction calculated correctly in the first place.
Québec remittances
Québec employers remit provincial source deductions, including Québec income tax, QPP and QPIP, to Revenu Québec rather than to the CRA, while federal income tax and EI still go to the CRA. SeroPayroll calculates both sets of amounts and prepares the Québec portion for the TPZ-1015 remittance alongside the federal remittance on the PD7A.
The Québec Health Services Fund contribution is calculated as part of the same process, so Québec employers see all of their provincial obligations together. The interface is available in Canadian French, which makes it easier for bookkeepers who work in French to review each remittance and its supporting figures before it is paid.

Employer levies by province
Beyond source deductions, employers pay levies that vary from province to province. SeroPayroll calculates workers’ compensation premiums for boards such as WCB, WSIB and CNESST, Ontario’s Employer Health Tax, Manitoba’s Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy, Newfoundland and Labrador’s HAPSET and Québec’s HSF, based on the payroll you actually ran.
Rates are stored as data, so when a province changes a rate, threshold or exemption, the update arrives without reinstalling the app. That matters for employers near an exemption threshold, such as Ontario’s EHT exemption, where a growing payroll can change what you owe partway through the year and catch an owner by surprise.
From remittance to the books
In SeroBooks Pro, payroll liabilities post to the balance sheet with each pay run, and the remittance payment clears them, ready to be matched in bank reconciliation. At any point you can see exactly what is owed to the CRA, Revenu Québec and each workers’ compensation board, and whether the last remittance cleared the bank.
In SeroPayroll, the GL journal export, as CSV or IIF-style files, takes the same entries to whatever accounting system you use. SeroPayroll starts at $25 a month for up to 10 employees in USD, with a 14-day free trial, and SeroBooks Pro includes Canadian and US payroll inside the ledger at $300 a month.
Frequently asked questions
What is a PD7A?
PD7A is the CRA’s statement of account and remittance voucher for payroll source deductions: income tax, CPP and EI. SeroPayroll calculates the PD7A amount for each remittance period according to your remitter type, so you know exactly what to pay and when it is due.
Does SeroPayroll support accelerated remitters?
Yes. SeroPayroll supports quarterly, regular, and accelerated threshold 1 and threshold 2 remittance schedules, showing the amount and due date for each period. If your average withholding changes your remitter type, you can update the schedule and the calendar follows.
Does SeroPayroll calculate Ontario EHT?
Yes. SeroPayroll calculates Ontario Employer Health Tax, as well as Manitoba’s HAPSE levy, Newfoundland and Labrador’s HAPSET, Québec’s HSF and workers’ compensation premiums for boards such as WCB, WSIB and CNESST. Rates are stored as data and updated without reinstalling.
Does SeroPayroll pay the CRA for me?
No. SeroPayroll calculates what you owe and when it is due, but it does not move money. You pay the CRA or Revenu Québec through your bank or their online services, then record the payment so your remittance history and liabilities stay up to date.
Can remittances post to my accounting?
In SeroBooks Pro, payroll liabilities and remittance payments post directly to the general ledger, ready for bank reconciliation. SeroPayroll exports GL journals as CSV or IIF-style files, which can be imported into other accounting systems your bookkeeper already uses, keeping wages and liabilities in the books.
