What is Kitchen display system (KDS)?

A kitchen display system is a screen that shows orders from the POS to cooks in real time, replacing printed tickets and tracking prep times by station.

A kitchen display system, or KDS, is a screen mounted in the kitchen that receives orders directly from the point of sale. Instead of printing a kitchen order ticket (KOT) for each order, the POS sends items to the right station: the grill sees burgers, the fryer sees fries, the bar sees drinks. Cooks tap or bump items when they are done, and the order moves to expo or pickup when every station has finished.

The main gains are speed and accuracy. Modifiers like “no onion” or “extra sauce” appear exactly as entered, without hand-written notes. Tickets do not get lost, smudged or stuck to the wrong rail. Orders from dine-in, takeout, QR ordering and delivery platforms all land in the same queue, and timers colour each ticket as it ages, so the kitchen sees at a glance which orders are running late during a rush.

A KDS also produces data a printer never could, such as average ticket time by station, by hour and by item. That helps with staffing and menu decisions: if one dish consistently slows the line, you can see it. Many kitchens run a mix, with screens on the line and a printer as backup or for expo. Reliable local networking matters, so the system should keep routing orders if the internet drops.

Example

A table orders two burgers (one with no onion) and two beers. The POS sends the burgers with the modifier to the grill screen and the beers to the bar screen. The grill bumps at 9 minutes, the bar at 2; the expo screen shows the order complete and the server is notified.
