What is T4 slip?

A T4 slip reports an employee’s annual employment income, taxable benefits and deductions to the CRA and the employee, due by the end of February.

The T4, Statement of Remuneration Paid, is the year-end slip every employer prepares for each employee who received employment income, taxable benefits or other remuneration during the calendar year. It shows total employment income, income tax deducted, CPP or QPP contributions, EI premiums, pensionable and insurable earnings, union dues, pension adjustments and coded amounts for benefits such as automobile or housing.

Employers file the slips with a T4 Summary that totals all slips and reconciles them with the source deductions remitted during the year. The deadline to file with the CRA and give copies to employees is the last day of February following the calendar year (or the next business day if it falls on a weekend). Employers filing more than five slips must file electronically, typically by uploading an XML file generated by payroll software through the CRA’s Internet File Transfer or My Business Account.

Québec employees receive a T4 and a provincial RL-1 slip. Errors on T4s lead to amended slips, possible PIER assessments for under-deducted CPP and EI, and confusion for employees filing their personal returns. Running a reconciliation before filing, matching payroll registers, remittances and the general ledger, catches most problems while they are still easy to fix, and well before employees start asking for their slips.

Example

An employee earned $52,000 in 2025, including a $1,200 taxable benefit. Their T4 shows box 14 employment income $52,000, box 16 CPP contributions, box 18 EI premiums, box 22 income tax deducted, boxes 24 and 26 insurable and pensionable earnings, and the benefit in the appropriate code box. It is due by the last day of February 2026, or the next business day when that falls on a weekend.
