Where Wave shines

Wave, owned by H&R Block, is known for low-cost accounting and invoicing aimed at freelancers and very small businesses, as of 2026 per its public site. For a sole proprietor sending a handful of invoices a month and tracking a few expenses, it’s often all that’s needed, and its low entry price is a genuine advantage.

The trade-off is depth. Inventory, purchasing, multi-location, payroll across every province and detailed permissions for staff and accountants aren’t what Wave was built for. That’s not a criticism; it’s a different product for a different stage of business, and many owners use it happily for years. Sole proprietors often never need more.

Signs you’ve outgrown it

Businesses tend to look beyond Wave when they start carrying stock, hire staff, add a second location, start selling on Amazon or Shopify, or need their accountant and team to work in the books with different access levels. Each of those adds work that a simple ledger leaves to spreadsheets.

At that point, spreadsheets for inventory and separate apps for payroll start costing more in time and errors than a fuller system costs in subscription. A good test is how many hours a month someone spends moving numbers between tools. If that number keeps rising, it’s time to compare. Your accountant can usually tell you when you’ve reached that point.

  • You carry inventory or buy from suppliers
  • You have employees on payroll
  • You have more than one location
  • Several people need different access

What SeroBooks adds

SeroBooks includes inventory with serials, batches and expiry, purchase orders, bank CSV import with rules, receipt scanning, fixed assets, 160+ reports with a custom builder and year-end close with period locks. Canadian sales tax is covered for every province, with US economic nexus tracked across 50 states. Bank reconciliation uses CSV import with rules today, with Plaid feeds rolling out.

SeroPayroll covers Canadian payroll from $25/mo for up to 10 employees, with vacation pay, stat holidays and overtime by each province’s statute. SeroBooks Pro includes Canadian and US payroll in the ledger, and SeroPOS posts store sales straight into SeroBooks if you also run a counter. Accountants get free practice seats.

When Wave may be the better fit

If you’re a freelancer or very small service business with no inventory and no employees, Wave’s low cost is hard to argue with. SeroBooks starts at $79.99/mo, which is more than many sole proprietors need to spend on accounting software, and its depth would mostly go unused. Simple businesses deserve simple tools.

Stay on Wave until its limits cost you real time or accuracy. Then compare honestly, using the trial with your own data. There’s no benefit in paying for features you don’t need, and Wave may serve a simple business well for a long time. The 14-day trial makes that comparison easy and free.
