Different approaches

Xero, founded in New Zealand, is a popular cloud ledger in many countries, as of 2026 per its public site. Its strength is a clean, well-designed core with a large marketplace of connected apps for inventory, payroll, point of sale and more. Businesses assemble the combination that suits them, and many accountants like working with it.

SeroBooks builds those pieces in. Inventory, payroll, purchasing, POS and year-end live on one double-entry ledger, which means fewer connections to maintain, fewer subscriptions to pay and fewer places for numbers to disagree. The trade-off is less choice of individual tools, in exchange for one system that’s designed to work together.

Inventory and purchasing

SeroBooks includes serials, batches and expiry, barcode labels, warehouse bins, transfers, adjustments, landed cost, assemblies and demand forecasting with two lead times. Purchase orders, goods received, purchase returns and foreign-currency bills are standard, and receipt scanning turns a photo of a supplier invoice into a draft bill. Assemblies cover kits and simple manufacturing.

For retailers, wholesalers and Amazon sellers, that removes the need for a separate inventory app and the sync between it and the books. Stock value on the balance sheet and cost of goods sold on the P&L come straight from the inventory records, so month-end doesn’t start with reconciling two systems.

  • Purchase orders and goods received
  • Landed cost and foreign-currency bills
  • Assemblies and stock valuation
  • Demand forecasting

Payroll and Canadian compliance

SeroBooks Pro includes payroll for all 13 Canadian provinces and territories and US federal and state withholding, with T4 XML, ROE .BLK and W-2 EFW2 files generated for you to upload. Pay runs post to the same ledger once, never twice. SeroPayroll offers Canadian payroll on its own from $25/mo.

Sales tax covers GST/HST/PST/QST for every province, with a Sales Tax Centre for returns, and US economic nexus is watched across 50 states. Year-end produces T2/GIFI, with fixed assets depreciated under CCA or MACRS. Canadian businesses get those features as part of the product rather than through add-ons. Accountants get free practice seats.

When Xero may be the better fit

If you run a service business, like Xero’s interface and want to choose best-of-breed apps for each function, Xero is a strong choice. Many accountants know it well, its marketplace is broad, and it has a large user community. For businesses with light inventory, its core may be all you need.

Xero can also suit businesses operating in countries Sero doesn’t focus on, since SeroBooks is built specifically for Canada and the US. If you have entities in the UK, Australia or New Zealand, keeping everything in one platform that supports all of them may matter more than built-in inventory. Pick the system that matches where you operate.

Keep Xero with SeroPOS

If your accountant prefers Xero, SeroPOS Pro syncs sales, tax and payments to it, so you can run Sero at the counter and keep Xero for the ledger. Sales arrive summarized and mapped to the accounts you choose, with tax recorded as a liability, and item-level detail stays in SeroPOS reports.

If you later want inventory and payroll on one ledger, talk to us about moving to SeroBooks and how your Xero data would come across. There’s no pressure to switch, and SeroPOS works well with Xero for as long as that arrangement suits your business. Your accountant can stay in the tool they prefer.

Frequently asked questions

Is SeroBooks a good Xero alternative?

For Canadian and US product businesses that want inventory, payroll and POS in the ledger rather than in connected apps, yes. Plans are $79.99, $150 and $300 a month in USD with a 14-day trial. Service businesses happy with Xero’s app ecosystem may prefer to stay.

Does SeroPOS work with Xero?

Yes. SeroPOS Pro includes a Xero sync for sales, taxes and payments, so you can use SeroPOS at the counter and keep Xero as your accounting system. SeroPOS Pro costs $49.99 a month or $499.99 a year, with a 14-day free trial.

Does SeroBooks include Canadian payroll?

SeroBooks Pro includes payroll for all 13 Canadian jurisdictions and US federal and state withholding, with T4, ROE and W-2 files generated for upload. SeroPayroll is a standalone Canadian payroll product from $25 a month for up to 10 employees.

Can I import my Xero file into SeroBooks?

SeroBooks’ documented imports are QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online. If you’re moving from Xero, contact the team to plan how your opening balances, lists and open items come across, so the move is checked properly rather than rushed. Many Xero users keep Xero and use the SeroPOS sync instead.

Does SeroBooks have an app marketplace like Xero?

SeroBooks focuses on built-in modules instead of a large marketplace: inventory, purchasing, payroll, banking, Amazon, POS and year-end are part of the product. Integrations cover Amazon, Stripe, Global Payments and Moneris terminals, Plaid, Twilio and QuickBooks. Built-in modules mean fewer connections to maintain.
