Who each is built for

QuickBooks Online, from Intuit, is widely used and widely known by accountants in Canada and the US, as of 2026. It suits service businesses and many small companies well, and its app marketplace fills gaps for almost any need, from inventory to time tracking to e-commerce. For many owners it’s simply the default choice.

SeroBooks is built for product businesses: retailers, wholesalers, Amazon sellers and multi-location operators who need inventory and the ledger to agree. It grew out of SeroPOS, so the till, the shelf and the books are one system. If most of your bookkeeping pain comes from stock, purchasing and sales channels, that design difference matters.

Inventory that’s actually inventory

SeroBooks inventory includes serial numbers, batches and expiry, barcode labels, warehouse bins, stock transfers, adjustments, landed cost, assemblies, stock valuation and demand forecasting with two lead times. Purchase orders, goods received, purchase returns and foreign-currency bills are standard, and receipt scanning turns a photo of a supplier invoice into a bill.

That means the balance sheet’s inventory figure comes from the same records your warehouse uses, not from a separate app’s export that someone reconciles at month-end. When a stocktake finds a difference, the adjustment hits the ledger directly, and your cost of goods sold reflects what actually left the shelf.

  • Serials, batches and expiry
  • Warehouse bins and transfers
  • Landed cost and assemblies
  • Forecasting with two lead times

Control and compliance

SeroBooks enforces 207 permission nodes on the server, with approvals, step-up authentication, two-person approval for sensitive actions, period locks and an append-only audit trail. That kind of enterprise-style control is part of the base price rather than a top-tier upgrade, which matters once several people work in the books. Value caps and rate limits apply to Maya, the AI employee, too.

Canadian sales tax is handled for every province, with a Sales Tax Centre for preparing returns. US sales tax with economic nexus is watched across 50 states. Fixed assets support CCA and MACRS, year-end produces T2/GIFI, and accountants get free practice seats with access you control and every change recorded.

When QuickBooks Online may be the better fit

If you run a service business with little or no inventory, and your accountant works mainly in QuickBooks Online, it’s often the path of least resistance. Its ecosystem of connected apps, the number of bookkeepers who already know it and the wealth of tutorials online are real advantages that shouldn’t be dismissed.

QuickBooks Online also offers lower entry tiers for very small businesses, per its public site, which can cost less than SeroBooks’ $79.99/mo Starter plan. If your needs are simple and stable, check their current plans against what you actually need before switching. Moving only makes sense if it solves a real problem.

Keep both, or switch

You don’t have to choose right away. SeroPOS Pro syncs sales, tax and payments to QuickBooks Online, so you can run Sero at the counter and keep QuickBooks Online for the books while you evaluate. Many businesses start that way and decide later whether moving the ledger is worth it.

When you’re ready, SeroBooks imports QuickBooks Online data so customers, suppliers, items and history come across. Compare opening balances with your last QuickBooks Online reports, keep the old file read-only for reference, and invite your accountant to review the setup before going live. Every plan has a 14-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Is SeroBooks a good QuickBooks Online alternative?

For product businesses that need serious inventory, multi-location, Canadian and US tax, and POS on one ledger, yes. Plans are $79.99, $150 and $300 a month in USD, with a 14-day trial. Service businesses with little inventory may be perfectly well served by QuickBooks Online.

Can I import QuickBooks Online data into SeroBooks?

Yes. SeroBooks imports QuickBooks Online data so customers, suppliers, items and history come across. Compare balances with your final QuickBooks Online reports before going live, and keep the old company available read-only for a while so you can look things up if needed.

Does SeroBooks include payroll?

SeroBooks Pro at $300 a month includes payroll for all 13 Canadian provinces and territories and US federal and state withholding, on the same ledger, with T4 XML, ROE and W-2 files generated. SeroPayroll is a separate Canada-only option from $25 a month.

Will my accountant be able to use SeroBooks?

Yes. Accountant practice seats are free in SeroBooks. Accountants get access to your books with permissions you control, and every change they make is recorded in the append-only audit trail. A penny-verified export is also available if they need data in another format.

Can I keep QuickBooks Online and use SeroPOS?

Yes. SeroPOS Pro, at $49.99 a month, syncs sales, tax and payments to QuickBooks Online. Many businesses start with that combination and move the books to SeroBooks later, once they want inventory and the ledger in one system. Both run on the same Canadian and US tax rules.
