From hours to pay
Hourly payroll is only as accurate as the hours behind it. SeroPayroll includes timesheets and a time clock, so employees record their hours as they work and managers review them before the pay run. Approved hours flow straight into the calculation, without retyping from paper cards, a whiteboard in the back room or a separate time-tracking app that never quite matches.
Because the timesheet and the payroll engine are the same system, overtime, vacation accrual and statutory holiday pay are calculated from the hours actually worked. There is no second step where someone works out overtime by hand and adds it as a separate line, which is where many small-business payroll errors begin.
Overtime the way each statute writes it
Overtime rules differ across Canada. Ontario uses a 44-hour weekly threshold. Alberta pays on the greater of daily hours over 8 or weekly hours over 44. British Columbia uses a daily two-tier rule plus a weekly 40-hour threshold. SeroPayroll applies each province’s rule as the statute writes it, and handles banked overtime where the province allows it.
That means a manager does not need to be an employment standards expert to get overtime right. The hours go in, the correct premium comes out, and the pay stub shows how it was calculated. For employers with staff in more than one province, each employee is paid under the rules of their own jurisdiction.
- Ontario: overtime after 44 hours a week
- Alberta: greater of daily over 8 or weekly over 44
- British Columbia: daily two-tier and weekly over 40
- Banked overtime where the statute permits
Shifts and attendance at the counter
In restaurants and shops, time tracking starts at the point of sale. SeroPOS includes HRM features for attendance, leave, shifts, KPIs and employee documents, so managers can see who is working, who is off and where coverage is thin. Register shifts and Z-reports tie each cash drawer to the person responsible, which makes shortages easier to understand and resolve.
SeroPOS staff performance reports show sales by employee, which helps with scheduling your strongest people at the busiest times and spotting who might need more training. Combined with SeroPayroll’s time clock, owners see both sides of labour: what each shift cost in wages and what it brought in as sales.
Choosing the right setup
Businesses that need payroll and time tracking without changing accounting systems use SeroPayroll, from $25 a month in USD for up to 10 employees. Businesses that want time, payroll and accounting in one ledger use SeroBooks Pro at $300 a month, which includes Canadian and US payroll alongside forecasting, job costing and the audit trail.
SeroPOS HRM is part of the point of sale, from $29.99 a month, for scheduling and attendance on the shop floor. A dedicated employee app for SeroPayroll is in development. In the meantime, employees who are only paid, and do not run payroll themselves, need no login, so you only set up access for the people who actually manage payroll.
Frequently asked questions
Does SeroPayroll have a time clock?
Yes. SeroPayroll includes timesheets and a time clock. Approved hours flow directly into pay runs, where overtime, vacation pay and statutory holiday pay are calculated according to the rules of each employee’s province, so nobody has to calculate premiums by hand.
How does SeroPayroll calculate overtime?
SeroPayroll applies each province’s statute: for example, Ontario’s 44-hour weekly threshold, Alberta’s greater of daily over 8 or weekly over 44, and British Columbia’s daily two-tier rule with a weekly 40-hour threshold. Banked overtime is supported where the statute allows it.
Can SeroPOS schedule staff shifts?
SeroPOS includes HRM features for shifts, attendance, leave, KPIs and employee documents. Register shifts and Z-reports also track who handled each cash drawer, and staff performance reports show sales by employee to help managers plan schedules around the busiest periods of the week.
Is there an employee app for clocking in?
SeroPayroll includes a time clock today. A dedicated employee app is in development and not yet available, so we do not promise features it does not have. Employees who are only paid, and do not administer payroll, do not need a SeroPayroll login.
Do I need SeroBooks to use time tracking?
No. SeroPayroll includes timesheets and a time clock on its own, from $25 a month in USD for up to 10 employees. SeroBooks Pro, at $300 a month, includes payroll inside the ledger for businesses that want time, pay and accounting together in one system.
