What is PD7A remittance?
A PD7A remittance is an employer’s payment to the CRA of the CPP, EI and income tax deducted from pay, plus the employer’s CPP and EI share.
PD7A is the CRA’s name for the statement of account for current source deductions, and the term is widely used for the payroll remittance itself. Each remittance includes the income tax, CPP and EI withheld from employees plus the employer’s matching CPP and EI contributions. The money belongs to the government from the moment it is deducted, so the CRA treats late or missing remittances seriously, with penalties and interest.
How often you remit depends on your average monthly withholding amount (AMWA) from two calendar years earlier. Regular remitters pay by the 15th of the month after the month the employees were paid. Small employers with a low AMWA and a clean compliance record may qualify for quarterly remitting. Larger employers are accelerated remitters: threshold 1 remitters pay twice a month, and threshold 2 remitters (the largest) remit up to four times a month.
Remittances can be made through online banking, the CRA’s My Payment service or a financial institution. A remittance is on time only if the CRA receives it by the due date; if that date falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day. In Québec, employers also remit provincial deductions such as QPP, QPIP and Québec income tax to Revenu Québec on a separate schedule.
For March pay, a regular remitter withheld $4,200 income tax, $1,350 CPP and $410 EI. It adds the employer’s $1,350 CPP and $574 EI (1.4 × $410). The PD7A remittance of $7,884 is due by April 15.
