A counter that keeps up with a big catalogue

Hardware stores live with a catalogue most retailers would find absurd: loose fasteners, plumbing fittings in every size, tools, paint sundries, garden supplies and a seasonal aisle that changes four times a year. The register has to find any of it in a second and the back office has to know what is really on the shelf.

SeroPOS handles barcode scanning, product variations for sizes and finishes, and label printing for items that arrive without a usable barcode. Excel import lets you load a supplier’s price file in one pass, and drag-and-drop button layouts put the high-volume items without barcodes, like keys cut or bulk goods, one tap away.

  • Variations for size, finish and pack quantity
  • Excel import and export for supplier price files
  • Custom button layouts for unbarcoded items

Trade customers and charge accounts

Contractors and property managers expect their pricing and want to sign for goods rather than pay at the till. In SeroPOS, customer profiles and price groups make trade pricing automatic once the customer is selected, and purchase history shows what a crew bought for which job. Separate groups can cover contractors, property managers and other volume buyers.

For accounts on terms, SeroBooks issues invoices, tracks accounts receivable, sends customer statements and can apply finance charges to late balances. Payments received are matched to open invoices, so month-end collections become a report instead of a stack of carbon copies and a calculator. Statements can go out monthly so trade customers see exactly what they owe.

Purchasing, receiving and stock control

Hardware margins depend on buying well. SeroPOS keeps your suppliers, raises purchase orders and records stock as it is received, with transfers between locations and adjustments for breakage or shrink. Low-stock alerts flag items before a contractor finds an empty bin. Received stock updates cost and counts as soon as it is checked in.

SeroBooks adds deeper inventory control when you need it: serial numbers for power tools and equipment, warehouse bins for the back room or yard, stock valuation and landed cost so freight and duty land in the cost of goods rather than a general expense line. Demand forecasting with two lead times helps plan the spring and fall rush.

Books, tax and year-end

Sales from the counter post to SeroBooks along with supplier bills and payments, so the general ledger reflects what actually happened in the store. Bank reconciliation uses CSV import with rules today, with live bank feeds rolling out, and over 160 built-in reports cover sales, margins, A/R ageing and financial statements.

Canadian stores get GST/HST, PST and QST for every province with returns prepared in the Sales Tax Centre, and T2/GIFI support at year-end. US stores get sales tax and economic nexus tracking. Your accountant can log in with free accountant access and review everything directly in the ledger. Locked periods keep last year’s numbers from shifting after they are filed.

Staff, payroll and permissions

A hardware store often runs a mix of full-time counter staff, part-time weekend help and seasonal yard workers. SeroPayroll runs Canadian payroll for all 13 provinces and territories from $25 USD a month for up to 10 employees, with CPP, EI, vacation pay, statutory holidays, remittances, T4s and ROEs. Seasonal hires can be added and released with ROE files ready for Service Canada.

On the floor, role-based permissions decide who can override a price, issue a refund or open a charge account. Register shifts and Z-reports give each closing a clear record, and the audit trail in SeroBooks Pro shows who changed what in the books. Owners can review exceptions at the end of each day rather than chasing them at month-end.

Frequently asked questions

Can SeroPOS handle a hardware store’s large inventory?

Yes. SeroPOS supports unlimited products on both plans, barcode scanning, product variations for sizes and finishes, and Excel import and export for loading supplier price files. Low-stock alerts, purchase orders and stock adjustments keep counts current, and SeroBooks adds serial numbers, warehouse bins and landed cost when you need more control.

How do I give contractors their own pricing?

Put trade customers into a price group in SeroPOS. When the customer is selected at checkout, their group pricing applies automatically, so staff do not need to override prices by hand. Customer profiles also keep purchase history, which helps when a contractor asks what they bought for a particular job.

Can trade customers buy on account?

Yes, through SeroBooks. You can invoice customers on terms, track accounts receivable, send customer statements and apply finance charges to overdue balances. Payments are matched against open invoices, and A/R ageing reports show who owes what so collections take less time at month-end.

What hardware does SeroPOS work with?

SeroPOS runs on iPad, iPhone, Android devices, Windows PCs and Macs. It works with ESC/POS receipt printers from Epson, Star and compatibles, barcode scanners, label printers and cash drawers. For card payments, the Global Payments T650p terminal is recommended, and Moneris is also supported. There is no proprietary hardware lock-in.

Does Sero run payroll for hardware store staff?

Yes. SeroPayroll covers Canadian payroll in all 13 provinces and territories, starting at $25 USD a month for up to 10 employees, with remittances, T4s and ROEs. US stores can run payroll inside SeroBooks Pro at $300 USD a month, which covers federal and state withholding and W-2 files.
