Florida sales tax and county surtaxes

Florida’s state sales tax rate is 6%, administered by the Florida Department of Revenue. Most counties add a discretionary sales surtax, so the combined rate depends on the county where the goods are delivered or the service is provided. The surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of a single item’s price, which matters for furniture, boats and electronics retailers.

SeroPOS sets the combined rate per location, so a store in Miami-Dade and another in Orange County each charge their own. SeroBooks keeps tax collected by county, which is how the Florida return asks for it. Short-term rental and hotel operators also deal with county tourist development taxes, which you can set up as their own tax codes. Each tax then lands in its own account.

Restaurants and the tourist season

Florida taxes restaurant meals and most prepared food at the combined state and county rate. Mandatory service charges are generally taxable, while tips the customer chooses to leave are not. Restaurants in Orlando and Miami Beach serving large groups and tourists need both handled cleanly on the bill. SeroPOS keeps each charge on its own line.

Seasonality shapes everything. Snowbird and spring-break months can carry a year’s profit, and summer can be thin. SeroPOS reports sales by day, by trending item and by staff member so you can schedule to demand, and SeroBooks budgets and the cash-flow projector help plan for the slow months. Maya, the AI employee in SeroBooks, can send a morning briefing on yesterday’s sales and stock.

  • Restaurant meals: taxable at state rate plus county surtax
  • Surtax applies to the first $5,000 of a single item
  • Mandatory service charges: generally taxable
  • Tourist development taxes: county-level, on short-term lodging

Payroll and nexus for Florida businesses

Florida has no personal state income tax, so payroll centres on federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, plus state reemployment tax. SeroPayroll is Canada-only; US payroll lives in SeroBooks Pro at $300 a month, with federal and state withholding, W-2 files in EFW2 format and 1099-NEC slips, posting into the same ledger as sales.

Florida’s economic nexus threshold for remote sellers is $100,000 in taxable sales into the state over the previous calendar year. Florida e-commerce brands selling to other states face each state’s own thresholds. SeroBooks watches nexus across all 50 states and flags when your sales into a state approach the line.

Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville

SeroPOS serves Cuban cafés in Little Havana, seafood restaurants in Tampa Bay, beach shops in the Panhandle, convenience stores in Jacksonville and gift shops near Orlando’s attractions. It runs on iPad, Android, Windows and Mac, and payments run through Global Payments, Stripe or PayPal. Delivery-platform menus are managed in SeroPOS; direct Uber Eats integration is rolling out in Canada first.

Sero is based in British Columbia, Canada, and serves Florida remotely by US phone at +1 (213) 265-9014, email and in-app chat, with no Florida office. SeroPOS starts at $29.99 a month, SeroBooks at $79.99, and every plan has a 14-day free trial. Extra locations are $100 a month each on either product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the sales tax rate in Florida?

Florida’s state rate is 6%. Most counties add a discretionary sales surtax, which applies to the first $5,000 of a single item’s price. The combined rate depends on the county. SeroPOS sets the rate per location and SeroBooks tracks tax collected by county.

Is SeroPOS available in Spanish?

Yes. SeroPOS supports 16 interface languages, including Spanish and English, so cashiers and kitchen staff can work in the language they prefer. Receipts and menus can be set up to suit your customers. SeroPOS runs on iPad, Android, Windows and Mac, so staff can use the devices they already know.

What is Florida’s economic nexus threshold?

Remote sellers must collect Florida sales tax once their taxable sales into Florida exceed $100,000 in the previous calendar year. SeroBooks watches your sales into Florida and every other state against its threshold and flags when you approach one. Marketplace sales may be treated differently.

Does Sero handle payroll for Florida employees?

Yes, through SeroBooks Pro at $300 a month, which covers federal and state withholding, W-2 files in EFW2 format and 1099-NEC slips. Florida has no personal state income tax. SeroPayroll, the standalone product, is for Canadian payroll only. Payroll posts to the same ledger as sales.

Does SeroPOS integrate with delivery apps in Florida?

SeroPOS includes delivery-platform menu and order management. A direct Uber Eats integration is rolling out in Canada first; Sero does not currently offer live DoorDash or Grubhub integration. Online ordering and QR self-ordering are built in. Orders from your own online store land in the web-order queue.
