HST in New Brunswick

New Brunswick charges 15% HST: 5% federal and 10% provincial, filed as one tax with the CRA. For a retailer in Moncton or a restaurant in Fredericton, that means a single tax line on most sales and one return, which is simpler than the GST-plus-PST provinces. Input tax credits on business purchases reduce what you remit.

The complexity comes when you sell across borders. A Saint John wholesaler shipping to Ontario charges 13%, to Nova Scotia 14% and to Alberta 5% GST. SeroBooks picks the tax code from the customer’s province, so invoices carry the right rate, and the Sales Tax Centre totals collected HST by rate for your return.

Overtime and vacation under the Employment Standards Act

New Brunswick’s overtime rule is unusual. After 44 hours in a week, employees must be paid at least 1.5 times the provincial minimum wage, not 1.5 times their own regular rate. Many employers pay time-and-a-half on the regular rate anyway, by policy or contract, but the statutory floor is tied to minimum wage, and a payroll system built for Ontario will not model it.

SeroPayroll writes overtime the way each statute writes it, so you can apply New Brunswick’s statutory rule or your more generous company policy. Vacation is two weeks at 4% to start and three weeks at 6% after eight years of service, and SeroPayroll accrues vacation pay in dollars so the balance owed is visible at every pay run.

  • Overtime threshold: 44 hours a week
  • Statutory overtime floor: 1.5 times the minimum wage
  • Vacation: 4%, rising to 6% after eight years
  • WorkSafeNB premiums on assessable earnings

New Brunswick’s public holidays

New Brunswick’s paid public holidays are New Year’s Day, Family Day in February, Good Friday, Canada Day, New Brunswick Day on the first Monday of August, Labour Day, Remembrance Day and Christmas Day. Victoria Day, Thanksgiving and Boxing Day are retail days of rest in many cases but are not paid public holidays under the Employment Standards Act.

To qualify for holiday pay, an employee generally needs 90 days of employment in the 12 months before the holiday. SeroPayroll stores New Brunswick’s calendar and eligibility separately from every other province, so a company with staff in Moncton and Halifax pays each employee by their own province’s rules. Company holidays can be added on top.

Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton and the north shore

New Brunswick is Canada’s only officially bilingual province, and many workplaces run in both languages. SeroPayroll’s interface is available in Canadian French, and SeroPOS supports French among its 16 languages. Sero is based in British Columbia and serves New Brunswick remotely by phone, email and in-app chat, without a local office.

Typical New Brunswick customers include restaurants and cafés in downtown Moncton and Dieppe, retailers in Fredericton, distributors in Saint John, and seasonal tourism businesses along the Acadian coast and the Fundy shore. Seasonal operators lean on SeroPayroll’s ROE files at the end of the season and SeroPOS’s offline mode at busy outdoor events.
