POS, payroll and accounting software for Prince Edward Island
PEI’s small business year is built around summer: lobster suppers, beach shops and Charlottetown patios, then a quiet winter. Sero handles 15% HST, Island payroll rules and the seasonal ROEs that come with it.

HST on the Island
Prince Edward Island charges 15% HST, 5% federal and 10% provincial, filed as a single tax with the CRA. Every taxable sale on the Island carries one rate, and input tax credits on what you buy for the business reduce what you remit. PEI moved from a separate PST to HST in 2013.
SeroPOS charges HST at the counter and SeroBooks totals collected HST and input credits in the Sales Tax Centre. If you ship Island products, such as preserves, potatoes or crafts, to the rest of Canada, SeroBooks charges the destination’s rate: 13% to Ontario, 14% to Nova Scotia, 5% GST to Alberta.
PEI employment standards in payroll
Under PEI’s Employment Standards Act, overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular wage after 48 hours in a week. That is higher than most provinces, so long summer weeks in a kitchen may not trigger overtime that would apply in Ontario or BC. SeroPayroll applies the PEI threshold to PEI employees automatically.
Vacation is two weeks at 4% to start and three weeks at 6% after eight years, and PEI employees are entitled to paid sick leave days after a qualifying period of service. SeroPayroll accrues vacation pay in dollars, and workers’ compensation is through the Workers Compensation Board of PEI, with assessable earnings kept by pay run.
Paid holidays on PEI
PEI’s paid holidays are New Year’s Day, Islander Day on the third Monday of February, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, Remembrance Day and Christmas Day. Victoria Day, Thanksgiving and Boxing Day are not on the statutory list. Employers may still give them by policy.
An employee qualifies for holiday pay if they have been employed for 30 calendar days and earned pay on at least 15 of the 30 days before the holiday. Pay is an average day’s pay, and anyone who works the holiday earns 1.5 times their rate plus that day’s pay or a substitute day. SeroPayroll stores PEI’s list and formula as its own.
- Islander Day: third Monday of February
- National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: September 30
- Eligibility: 30 days employed, paid on 15 of the last 30
- Overtime: after 48 hours a week
Charlottetown, Summerside and the north shore
Island businesses are small and hands-on. A restaurant on Victoria Row, a gift shop in Cavendish, a fish market in North Rustico, a bakery in Summerside and a craft brewery in Montague all need a till that is quick to learn and books the owner can actually read. SeroPOS is self-serve with a guided start and a 14-day trial with no credit card.
Sero is based in British Columbia and serves PEI remotely, by phone, email and in-app chat. There is no Island office. Pricing is in US dollars: SeroPOS from $29.99 a month, SeroBooks from $79.99 and SeroPayroll from $25 for up to 10 employees. Every product has a 14-day free trial, and annual billing is available.
Frequently asked questions
What is the HST rate in PEI?
Prince Edward Island charges 15% HST, made up of 5% federal and 10% provincial, filed as one tax with the CRA. PEI replaced its separate provincial sales tax with HST in 2013. SeroPOS and SeroBooks charge HST on taxable sales and track input tax credits.
When does overtime start in PEI?
PEI requires overtime at 1.5 times the regular wage after 48 hours in a week. There is no daily overtime threshold. SeroPayroll applies the 48-hour rule for PEI employees from timesheets or the time clock, separate from other provinces’ rules.
Is Islander Day a paid holiday?
Yes. Islander Day, the third Monday of February, is a paid holiday in PEI. Eligible employees, those employed 30 calendar days and paid on 15 of the 30 days before, receive an average day’s pay. Working the holiday earns 1.5 times the rate on top.
Can SeroPOS run a summer food truck or market stall?
Yes. SeroPOS runs on iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets, works in offline mode when the connection drops, and syncs once you are back online. It supports modifiers, tips, split bills and mixed tender, so a stall can run the same way as a dining room.
Does SeroPayroll produce ROEs for seasonal staff?
Yes. SeroPayroll produces Records of Employment as .BLK files for upload to ROE Web and tracks the five-day issuing deadline. Vacation pay owed is shown in dollars, so the final cheque at the end of the season is correct. The employee’s details stay on file for rehire next season.
