Add-on vs standalone
QuickBooks Payroll, from Intuit, is designed as an add-on to QuickBooks Online, as of 2026 per its public site. If you already run QuickBooks Online and your accountant works there, it keeps payroll in the same place as the books, with one vendor and one login. That simplicity is a big part of its appeal.
SeroPayroll stands on its own. You don’t need an accounting subscription to use it, and its GL export in CSV and IIF-style formats works with whatever ledger you have, including QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop and Sage. You can change accounting systems later without changing payroll, or the other way round.
Canadian depth
SeroPayroll covers all 13 provinces and territories, reconciled to the CRA calculator. Vacation pay, thirteen stat holiday formulas and overtime follow each statute, and employer levies such as WCB, Ontario EHT and Québec HSF are calculated with each run. Taxable benefits, garnishments and deductions follow a set priority order. Rates are stored as data so annual changes are applied quickly.
Remittances follow PD7A schedules, including accelerated threshold 1 and 2, and Revenu Québec’s TPZ-1015. PIER review flags CPP and EI issues before CRA does. Year-end produces T4, T4A and T5018 XML for upload, and ROEs are generated as .BLK files with the five-day deadline tracked. Filing readiness checks catch gaps before you upload.
- CPP/CPP2, EI, QPP/QPIP and T4127 tax
- Statute-specific overtime
- PD7A and TPZ-1015 schedules
- PIER review
Payroll on the same ledger, with SeroBooks
If you want payroll inside your accounting, SeroBooks Pro includes Canadian and US payroll on one ledger at $300/mo, alongside inventory, invoicing, banking and year-end. US payroll covers federal and state withholding and produces W-2 EFW2 files for upload to the SSA, so cross-border employers stay in one system. Inventory and payroll then share one set of books.
The same login works across SeroPayroll and SeroBooks, so you can start with standalone payroll and move to the combined ledger later without re-entering employees or history. Many businesses begin with SeroPayroll alongside their existing books and move the rest once they’re confident. There’s no penalty for starting small and growing into it.
When QuickBooks Payroll may be the better fit
If your books are in QuickBooks Online, your accountant prefers it, and you want the provider to process direct deposit for you, QuickBooks Payroll keeps everything under one vendor with one bill. That simplicity counts for a lot, especially for owners who don’t want to manage bank file uploads. Many owners value that.
Businesses that rely heavily on Intuit’s ecosystem, including apps connected to QuickBooks Online, may find the add-on the easiest route. If you’re content with QuickBooks Online and its payroll today, switching payroll alone may not be worth the effort. Choose based on where your books live and how much control you want over each pay day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use SeroPayroll without QuickBooks?
Yes. SeroPayroll is standalone Canadian payroll and doesn’t need any accounting subscription. It exports GL journals in CSV and IIF-style formats, so you can post to QuickBooks, another ledger, or use SeroBooks, which shares the same login. Pay runs post to the ledger once, never twice.
Is SeroPayroll cheaper than QuickBooks Payroll?
SeroPayroll starts at $25 a month for up to 10 employees and doesn’t require an accounting subscription. QuickBooks Payroll pricing depends on plan and is typically added on top of QuickBooks Online, so check their current plans and compare the total you’d pay.
Does Sero do US payroll?
US payroll is included in SeroBooks Pro at $300 a month, with federal and state withholding and W-2 EFW2 files generated for upload. SeroPayroll itself is Canada-only, so employers with US staff use SeroBooks Pro, which covers both countries. Both are calculated on the same ledger as your accounting.
Does SeroPayroll process direct deposits?
SeroPayroll produces a CPA 005 direct-deposit file for RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC and Desjardins that you upload to your bank. It doesn’t move money itself. Cheques and e-transfer lists are also supported for staff paid those ways. The bank then pays employees on the date you choose.
Can I post SeroPayroll to QuickBooks Desktop?
Yes. SeroPayroll exports GL journals in an IIF-style format that QuickBooks Desktop can import, as well as CSV for other ledgers. A pay run is designed to reach the ledger once, never twice, so you don’t end up with duplicated wage expense.
