POS, payroll and accounting software for Yukon businesses
Yukon businesses charge only GST, run a big summer tourism season and face supply lines that stretch back to the south. Sero gives Whitehorse and Dawson City businesses a till, a ledger and a Yukon-aware payroll in one family of apps.
Yukon, handled by Sero
GST only
Yukon has no territorial sales tax, so sales carry 5% GST, with input tax credits tracked in SeroBooks.
Yukon payroll rules
SeroPayroll applies Yukon’s daily and weekly overtime, holiday calendar and territorial income tax under the CRA formulas.
Discovery Day and more
Yukon-specific holidays such as Discovery Day in August are in the territory’s own calendar.
Workers’ comp tracked
Assessable earnings per pay run are kept for Yukon workers’ compensation reporting.
Landed cost
Freight from Vancouver or Edmonton goes into inventory cost, so margins reflect what goods cost to get north.
Offline selling
SeroPOS keeps ringing sales when the connection drops on the highway or at a remote lodge.
One company, one login, three products that share their numbers

Sales tax in the Yukon: GST and nothing else
Yukon has no territorial sales tax and no HST, so a sale in Whitehorse carries only the 5% federal GST, filed with the CRA. For a retailer or restaurant, that keeps the till simple: one tax, one return, and input tax credits on business purchases that reduce what you remit.
Where Yukon businesses need care is selling south. An online order shipped from Whitehorse to Ontario is subject to 13% HST, and to BC it attracts GST plus BC’s PST rules if you are registered there. SeroBooks picks the tax code from the customer’s province, and the Sales Tax Centre totals GST and HST collected for the return.
Running Yukon payroll
Yukon’s Employment Standards Act sets overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 8 in a day or 40 in a week. Long summer shifts at lodges, tour companies and restaurants trigger daily overtime often, so a weekly-only calculation is not enough. SeroPayroll reads timesheets day by day and applies both thresholds without double counting.
Yukon income tax is calculated with federal tax under the CRA’s T4127 formulas, alongside CPP and EI, and remitted on the PD7A schedule. Yukon has no employer health payroll tax, unlike the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Workers’ compensation premiums are based on assessable payroll, which SeroPayroll keeps per pay run for your annual report.
Yukon’s statutory holidays
Yukon’s statutory holiday list includes holidays found nowhere else. Discovery Day, on the third Monday of August, marks the 1896 gold discovery in the Klondike. National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 is a statutory holiday in Yukon, and the territory added the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.
The rest of the list follows the familiar pattern: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day and Christmas Day. SeroPayroll stores Yukon’s calendar and holiday pay formula separately from every province, so a company with staff in Whitehorse and Vancouver pays each by the right rules.
- Discovery Day: third Monday of August
- National Indigenous Peoples Day: June 21
- National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: September 30
- Overtime: over 8 hours a day or 40 a week
Whitehorse, Dawson City and the highway
Most Yukon businesses are in Whitehorse, with tourism, retail and service operators in Dawson City, Watson Lake, Haines Junction and Carmacks. The year swings hard: busy summers with visitors on the Alaska Highway and quieter winters. SeroBooks budgets, cash-flow projections and demand forecasting help plan stock and staffing across that cycle.
Goods travel a long way to reach the Yukon, so SeroBooks landed cost adds freight to each item’s cost and purchase orders help buy ahead. Sero is based in British Columbia and serves the Yukon remotely by phone, email and in-app chat, on Pacific hours, with no Yukon office. Pricing is in US dollars.
Frequently asked questions
Is there PST in the Yukon?
No. Yukon has no territorial sales tax and no HST, so sales made in the territory carry only the 5% federal GST. If you ship to customers in other provinces, you generally charge their rate, such as 13% HST in Ontario. SeroBooks picks the code from the customer’s province.
When does overtime start in the Yukon?
Yukon requires overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 8 in a day or 40 in a week. SeroPayroll applies both the daily and weekly thresholds from timesheets or the built-in time clock, without paying the same hour twice.
Is Discovery Day a paid holiday?
Yes. Discovery Day, the third Monday of August, is a statutory holiday in Yukon. National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 are also on Yukon’s list. SeroPayroll stores Yukon’s calendar separately from the provinces.
Does Yukon have a payroll tax?
Yukon has no employer health or payroll tax of the kind found in Ontario, Manitoba, Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador, and no payroll tax like the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Employers still pay CPP and EI employer shares and workers’ compensation premiums, which SeroPayroll tracks.
Can SeroPOS work at a remote Yukon lodge?
SeroPOS has an offline mode that keeps taking sales when the internet drops and syncs once the connection is back. It runs on iPad, Android tablets and Windows. Card payments depend on your terminal and processor, so check how it behaves offline before you rely on it.
