The short version

Square, as of 2026 per its public site, is known for getting a business taking payments quickly, with its own hardware, a free entry plan and a very polished setup flow. That convenience usually comes with Square as your payment processor, which means your processing rate is whatever Square charges, and changing processors later means changing your whole system.

SeroPOS takes a different approach. You run it on devices you already own, choose your processor, and keep inventory, purchasing and accounting in the same system. If processing cost or back-office depth matters to your business, that difference adds up over a year. If neither matters much, Square’s simplicity may be worth more to you than flexibility.

Payments and processing cost

For many merchants, processing fees cost more over a year than the POS software. SeroPOS supports Global Payments, our recommended partner with the Verifone T650p terminal, as well as Moneris and Gravity Payments in store, and Stripe and PayPal online. Each tender is reported separately, so card deposits reconcile cleanly against sales in SeroPOS and in your books.

Because you can choose, we can compete. Send a recent statement and we’ll beat your current processing rate through Global Payments. If you already have a Moneris account you like, keep it and use it with SeroPOS. Either way, the decision about who processes your cards stays with you rather than being bundled into the software subscription.

Inventory and the back office

SeroPOS goes past basic stock counts: purchase orders, supplier records, transfers between locations, lot and expiry tracking for pharmacy and grocery, and ingredient-level food costing for kitchens. Its 25+ live reports cover sales, P&L, tax, stock, expiry, trends and staff performance, and export to Excel or PDF for your accountant or your own analysis.

On the accounting side, SeroPOS posts into SeroBooks, the same company’s double-entry ledger, or syncs to QuickBooks Online and Xero on the Pro plan. Built-in HRM covers attendance, leave, shifts and staff documents, and multi-location businesses get consolidated chain reporting on every plan. That’s a lot of ground that otherwise needs separate add-on apps.

When Square may be the better fit

If you’re a very small seller who wants to start taking card payments today with minimal setup and no monthly software fee, Square’s free entry plan is hard to beat. Its large ecosystem, broad name recognition and wide availability of compatible hardware also make it easy to find help, tutorials and staff who have used it before.

Square can also suit businesses that are happy with its processing rates and want one vendor for hardware, payments and software, with one support line and one bill. If that describes you, and inventory or accounting depth isn’t a priority, Square is a reasonable choice and you may not need what SeroPOS adds.

Switching from Square

SeroPOS supports Excel import, so you can export your item list from Square and bring your product catalogue across instead of rebuilding it by hand. Check variations, modifiers and tax settings after the import. Our team and the knowledge base on every admin screen walk you through printers, payment terminals and floor plans.

Start the 14-day free trial with no credit card, run it alongside Square for a few days if you like, and switch when your staff are comfortable. There are no contracts or onboarding fees with SeroPOS, so if it isn’t right for you, you simply stop. Most businesses know within a week whether the fit is right.

Frequently asked questions

Is SeroPOS a good alternative to Square?

It can be, especially if you want to choose your payment processor, need deeper inventory such as purchase orders and lot tracking, or want accounting built in. SeroPOS runs on devices you already own and costs $29.99 or $49.99 a month in USD, with a 14-day free trial and no contracts.

Can I use SeroPOS without Square payments?

Yes. SeroPOS works with Global Payments, Moneris and Gravity Payments for in-store cards, and Stripe and PayPal online. Global Payments with the Verifone T650p is our recommended partner, and we offer to beat your current processing rate if you send us a recent statement from your existing processor.

Is Square cheaper than SeroPOS?

Square offers a free entry plan per its public site, so the software can cost less at the start. Total cost depends heavily on processing fees, which often matter more than the subscription. Compare your effective processing rate as well as the software price before deciding which system is cheaper for your business.

Can I move my products from Square to SeroPOS?

Yes. Export your item list from Square and import it into SeroPOS with Excel import. Check variations, modifiers and tax settings after the import, then set up your printers and payment terminal. The in-app guides and live chat can help if anything doesn’t map across the way you expect.

Does SeroPOS include accounting?

SeroPOS includes built-in double-entry accounting and posts into SeroBooks, the same company’s full accounting system with 160+ reports. On SeroPOS Pro you can sync to QuickBooks Online or Xero instead if your accountant prefers them. Sales tax collected at the till is recorded separately from revenue either way.
